One of my favorite breakfast dishes is fried eggs! I also LOVE the combination of topping my fried eggs with Zaatar! This spice was a staple in our home growing up, and still is today in my home. We love to dip warm pita bread in olive oil and then dip it in a bowl of zaatar spice. This recipe is a delicious twist on fried eggs and zaatar.
What is Zaatar? Zaatar is an authentic Middle eastern and Mediterranean spice blend full of earthy and nutty flavors. It is a perfect blend of green roasted thyme, tangy sumac, and toasted sesame seeds!
It is considered a superfood in the middle east because it's rich in omega 3 fatty acids, and is exceptionally high in antioxidants! My cousin who grew up in Jerusalem, Palestine mentioned to me once that they would eat Zaatar before they would take exams because it was so good for memory and focus!
You can find Zaatar at your local ethnic market, on amazon here and because of its popularity, I've even seen it at Trader joes! I have to admit, the traditional blends are the best. If you can find an Egyptian blend, that is by far my favorite! We hope you enjoy this recipe!
